Is the dwelling vacant?
If the dwelling is vacant for 7 days or more, a hydraulic load test is required. This is a 3-day test that mimics the septic system operating under normal, lived-in conditions. On the first day, 400 gallons (the amount of water used depends on the size of the home; 400 gallons is the minimum amount used) of water is put into the system to "prep" it for the test. The absorption area is located, marked, and saturation level noted. On the second day, another 400 gallons is put into the system and the saturation level of the absorption area is noted. On the third and final day, the final saturation levels in the absorption area are measured. It is on this day that the septic inspection takes place. |

Is the dwelling occupied?
If the dwelling is currently occupied, a hydraulic load test is not necessary. A septic inspection can be performed without any preparation to the system.

Once it is time for the inspection, there are a few things to take note of:
- We need to have access to the home - our inspector needs to check the lines inside the home to verify they are connected properly and run into the septic tank.
- The septic tank must be pumped at the time of inspection - our inspector needs to check the tank for leaks, cracks, and functioning baffles. The tank must be empty to do this.
- We must pump the septic tank through the lids (manhole covers). This is required by PSMA to complete the inspection. If the lid is buried, it must be exposed!
After the repair is complete, we will email or fax it to the appropriate agent. Any repairs can be quoted and scheduled. Upon the completetion, an ammendment to the original inspection will be issued.
In the event that our company does not perform the repair outlined in the original report, a second inspection will need to be completed.
Please contact our office for more specific information regarding the inspection process!
